When there's water, Washoe Lake can be quite photogenic. This is a very shallow lake that catches runoff from the eastern Sierras. It was bone dry until recently. Late afternoon light really brought out the subtle colors of the high desert. Washoe Lake is just a few miles north of Carson City Nevada. Home Planet Images ref # 3605
Devils Postpile National Monument, Mammoth, California. The "postpile" monument consists of columns of basalt some 60 feet in height. This is the top of those columns, the polygonal column ends, in the rain.
